What’s the Deal with Water Ionizers?

water ionizer

Our main focus here is water purification. There are a few things that come with that territory, but one thing that we have not talked about is water ionizers. That’s because water ionizers are kind of a controversial topic. Before we get into it, let’s first explain the process behind water ionization.

The idea behind water ionization is to separate the water into alkaline and acid portions. This is accomplished by effectively running the water through an electrical current. As a result of this process, you can create water that is more basic or more acidic.

Typically, the machines that are sold to carry out this process run in the $1,000-and-up range. Yes, they’re expensive. In fact, that price tag is more expensive than anything we recommend on this site, including some of the whole house filter systems that we endorse.

Is it beneficial to ionize your water?

Companies that are hawking water ionizers often say that the alkaline, more basic water, is beneficial to our health for a variety of reasons. The acidic water is good for disinfecting and cleaning, they say. This sounds nice. Basic water for your health, acidic water for cleaning. They often cite a variety of “evidence” to back up their claims, but a lot of this is dubious.

While it’s true that alkaline foods generally have a lot to offer us, the claims for water are not well established. In fact, some scientists will actually go so far as to call it complete hogwash. As an example, you can check out this article from the Wall Street Journal to see some of these opinions. In fact, in that article there is a scientist who is also a physics and chemistry teacher at Boston University and he says that the claims made by these companies are “rubbish.”

What’s clear right now is that some of these companies are making a lot of money selling a product that may not do much of anything at all. This is like the snake oil type products you see in the SkyMall magazine when you are flying in an airplane. What’s unfortunate is that these companies are very good at making a slick and well reasoned sales pitch. They will find no shortage of customers, even when it comes to expensive products like this. It’s up to us to be discerning customers and to help others see the light as well.
